Sonoma has long been known for its expansive vineyards and premiere wine tasting, making for the ideal weekend getaway with someone special. But we aren’t the only ones revamping our ways for the New Year. Just recently, Sonoma County debuted a new way to experience their world-class wine—through a unique and educational self-guided tour. Now available at four Sonoma wineries, these Sonoma tours will allow guests to experience California wine country in a brand-new way.

With jam-packed weeks full of work, school and responsibility, you may be looking to schedule a weekend or two of relaxing downtime in 2010 and Sonoma is the perfect place to do so. On Jan. 1, the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission (SCWC) introduced the up-close-and-personal Sonoma Vineyard Adventures, which are now being offered for visitors at four local wineries including Mantanzas Creek Winery (Bennett Valley), Paradise Ridge Winery and Balletto Vineyards (Russian River Valley) and Mauritson Winery (Dry Creek Valley).

In recently wrapping up the holiday season, many people are looking to save a few dollars on upcoming vacations and Sonoma Vineyard Adventures caters to this with their free self-guided tours (although tasting fees may apply). Each tour is less than a mile in length and is created for all ages to enjoy. Before embarking upon the tour, each visitor will receive a detailed guide of the given vineyard, including interesting points to notice along the route. And just because the tours are self-guided doesn’t mean they aren’t educational. Each vineyard’s experience will offer an in-depth understanding of the grape growing and wine making processes.

“The experience we offer with Sonoma Vineyard Adventures is one that captures the most important piece of our Sonoma County story—our geographic diversity and indigenous bounty,” says Larry Levine, vice president of marketing and communications of the Sonoma County Winegrape Commission. “We’re about making the wine experience more approachable and allowing our guests in the vineyards to them see and experience how great grapes are grown.”

Sonoma County, California, located just 30 miles north of San Francisco, offers world-class wines from over 350 wineries in 13 designated wine regions, cuisine featuring locally grown and artisan products and destination resorts including 40 spas and 21 golf courses. As leaders in sustainable farming, a majority of the 62,000 total vineyard acres follow the California statewide guidelines. Family heritage, community and dedication to the land are what make Sonoma County a friendly first-rate wine and food destination.
