Many golfers can attest to the advantages of utilizing yardage-gauging devices on the course. While searching for the nearest sprinkler head is how the game is supposed to be played, a new level of convenience and accuracy can be reached when a golfer knows that exact distance to the pin from anywhere on the course.

My grievance with yardage-finding accessories is that one— you need to remember to bring them and two– they take up a lot of space in your golf bag or cart. Recently, I was tipped off about a golf GPS system that operates directly from a device that I already own and that I already take everywhere I go. My iPhone, my lifeline, as my portal to the world it essentially provides me the tools I need to communicate, stay entertained, remain informed and now, by way of a new application named Golfshot, it can tell me the distance to the pin. Can life get any sweeter?
Golfshot’s GPS features include a rangefinder that shows distances to greens, up to 40 professionally mapped targets per hole, and a GPS aerial view option. The app’s scoring feature provides detailed scorecards for every course, and easy-to-use scoring that leads to in-depth stat tracking and analysis of each individual’s game.
As an owner of several Apple products, I know when the tech company stands behind a product with its advertising dollars that the product has got to be worthwhile. Recently, Apple began promoting Golfshot in commercials across Japan and Australia. The international TV ads come as Golfshot: Golf GPS releases its latest version (v1.4) which features 11 languages and more than 25,000 fully mapped golf courses worldwide. Along with English, versions in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Italian, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish and French are also available.

“We have seen a huge increase of Golfshot users worldwide since our launch just five months ago. With the rapid growth and appeal of golf in Europe and Asia, it was only natural to add additional languages for our international members,” said Michael Hall, President of Shotzoom Software, the creators of Golfshot. “We believe the localization of this app for our golfers worldwide is unprecedented.”
Having just been released in June 2009, Golfshot has gained an enormous following and has been used on 6.5 million holes. In that short time, the application has also become one of Apple’s top 50 grossing iPhone apps among the more than 100,000 apps on the Apple iTunes Store. For me, the best attribute of the products is its affordability, a one-time fee of $30 is far more feasible than spending several hundreds on handheld GPS’s that only serve one function.
