Paying a visit to Sedona in the fall is always a nice time. Getting to watch local artists create one-of-a-kind works in Sedona in the fall, though, is an absolute must.

I know, I know. It’s not even the New Year. However, I strongly think you should start making plans to attend the 2010 Sedona Plein Air Art Festival next fall. Late last month, I attended this year’s installment, and it was a lovely, memorable experience even for those who might not be art aficionados. Throughout the week-long Plein Air Festival, artists set up shop all throughout Sedona and Jerome showcasing their work, teaching, lecturing, demonstrating and, most importantly, doing what they do best: painting. However, the true treats of the Sedona Plein Air Festival are the Quick Draw event and the Sumptuous Evening with the Artists gala, both held at Sedona’s stunning L’Auberge de Sedona (which is currently undergoing a $25-million renovation).

Quick Draw

The Quick Draw event brings artists to L’Auberge de Sedona to create a work of art in two hours (hence the “quick”). They are sprinkled all throughout the resort’s property and interpret the image that is stands before them, including Oak Creek, Sedona’s red rocks, flowers, twisted trees, even people who are enjoying a book or breakfast creekside. One of the most fun aspects of this event is spying artists among the tall trees or on a ledge near the creek. Guests at this popular event get to chat with the artists—most of whom are happy to meet new people and talk about their techniques—and watch them paint their masterpieces. At the end of the two-hour time period, the artists pack up their projects and take them to the ballroom to be displayed and, hopefully sold, later that evening.

Sumptuous Evening with the Artists Gala

The gala, on the last evening of the art festival, brings local art collectors together with the artists in one of L’Auberge’s gorgeous ballrooms. The artist’s pieces, which were created during the festival, hang on the walls. (Each artist gets to choose their three favorite paintings to exhibit.) Guests enjoy lip-smacking appetizers and endless cocktails before being given a chance to buy the displayed art, the proceeds of which go to the Sedona Arts Center. The artists were also presented awards for their amazing works. For example, noted plein air artist Rick Delanty was honored with the L’Auberge Presenting Sponsor Award. Delanty’s “Sedona Autumn” will be displayed in the L’Auberge lobby.
