Things to Do in San Diego – Sailing and Jazz
By Hayley • May 28th, 2009 • Category: Sports and Leisure
Per my post on Monday, its clear that there are many, many things to do in San Diego this summer, from festivals, to the Del Mar races, to just hanging out on the beach. But this past weekend while I was in San Diego, I was able to experience two activities I had not done before – sailing an 87-footer and hearing live jazz at a supper club.

The San Diego bay is the perfect spot for sailing, but most of us don’t have our own boats, nor the crew to sail them. But at Sail USA-11, guests are welcome to climb on board and sail the 1992 America’s Cup Stars & Stripes USA-11 sail boat. For a three-hour sail, it costs $100 per person, which is really worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once on board the ship (which is docked at Kona Kai Marina on Shelter Island, just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego) the captain, Lynn Hanna, gives a brief history about the boat and then puts all his regular crew and all his new passengers to work too. Each passenger is given the opportunity to steer the huge ship or crank the sails as the ship tacks and jibes through the San Diego Bay.
There is really no better site see, since being on the water gives an amazing perspective of the San Diego skyline. The crew on the ship will also point out other landmarks on the shore, such as the Hotel Del Coronado, the original lighthouse, the Maritime Museum of San Diego, etc. Lynn and his crew are friendly and fun and by the end of this trip, everyone feels like a team. In fact, Sail USA-11 also offers team-building sails, which really is a good idea for coworkers, since on the Starts and Stripes every one has to work together if you want to get anywhere.
Book your summer sail soon, since only a few weekend trips are available each month! www.sailusa11.com.

After my sailing experience, I was up for a little more adventure and was recommended to go to Anthology, the city’s premier dinner theater. Here, you can order dinner or drinks and then enjoy your meal while a live band plays. Now this is a very modern, upscale place – not the oldschool dark and dingy jazz club. Anthology has a house band that plays on Tuesday nights., but on the weekend there are often headliners who sell out the venue. I attended the Candy Dulfer concert and really enjoyed the concept of being entertained while enjoying some appetizers and wine. Anthology has got to be one of the all-time greatest date spots, so check it out when you are in town.

Is that one of Dennis Connors boats? so cool, if it is. That would be an experience.
Anthology is a great place. its really a special night out when you decide to go there. they do great special events too.
I’ve never been sailing but have always wanted to–except for my sea sickness!
the only way to see San Diego Bay is by sail boat – its gives an amazing perspective of the city.
The dinner theatre looks like so much fun. I love dinner theatres. I hope the chairs swivel otherwise it won’t be any fun for the people who can’t see.
I’ve heard of Anthology it sounds like a great date place…especially if you’e on a blind date and don’t have much to talk to talk about the music can drown out the awkwardness!
A few years ago my Dad and I rented a sailboat in San Diego. It was his dream to get his sailing license and even though it was his first time sailing a boat without an instructor, I was hardly nervous! We sailed to a part of San Diego you could only reach by boat (not Coronado) docked our boat and had an amazing lunch looking out to the ocean and making sure our boat didn’t float away! It was one of the best experiences, everyone has to try sailing! I wish I could remember where this area was, anyone know?
take me sailing!!! how amazing!!!
